Saving His Feelings

S

hanté was starting to worry about Elbee. It was 10:45 a.m., and he hadn’t showed up for work or called. That was unlike him since he was always on time or early. Plus, she knew how much he hated being late. Just as she was picking up the phone to call Elbee, he came walking through the door.

“Are you okay? You look terrible, if I must say so,” Shanté stated.

“Except for a crucial headache and a hangover, I’m fine. I’m sorry about being late. I had a really rough night. I also want to apologize about yesterday, and if Pig Pen is around, I would like to apologize to him, also.”

“That won’t be necessary. I had a little talk with him after you left, and he realized he deserved that ass whuppin’. I also let him know he needs to put that ghetto-ass baby mama of his in check. But, no more fighting. Okay?” Shanté said as she gave Elbee a hug.

Elbee sat at the desk and tried to gather himself. He grabbed a bottle of water and took two Tylenols in hopes that he would feel better. When he looked at the picture of Tasha on his desk, all the events of the night before ran through his mind. Shanté’s client, Danielle, snapped him out of his trance.

“What’s up, Elbee? How are you today, because you look like shit?”

Elbee laughed. “Thanks, Danielle. You sure know how to make a brotha feel better. Speaking of looking like shit, what the hell is wrong with your hair? I sure hope you’re planning on getting your hair relaxed today, because it sho’ looks nervous.”

“Fuck you, Elbee!” Danielle said as she laughed and caught a glimpse of the picture on the desk. “Who is that, your girl or someone else’s girl that you’re screwing?”

“As far as I know, she’s my girl. After the big knockdown, drag-out fight we had last night, I don’t know where we stand.”

The smile faded from Danielle’s face, and she immediately asked to speak to Shanté. Elbee didn’t know what to make of Danielle’s change in attitude, but he couldn’t worry about that right now. They had known each other for a while, and if she had wanted to hook up with him, she would have said something a long time ago. So, Elbee didn’t know what to think.

“Shanté, can I speak with you in the back for a moment?” Danielle asked sternly.

“Sure, Danielle. What’s wrong? Did Elbee do something? He has been a little on edge lately,” Shanté replied with concern.

“It’s about Elbee, but he didn’t do anything. Hell, for him to be a little edgy, he’s still that same slick-talking bastard that he always is,” Danielle said as she smiled. “This is about that girl in the picture on the desk.”

“Who, Tasha? You know her?”

“No, but I saw her last night at Jasper’s. I don’t know if I should be really telling you this.”

“Danielle, we go back a long way. So, if you know something that could hurt my cousin, you need to let me know,” Shanté stated firmly.
